I still pinch myself sometimes, as I didn’t actually have a clear view of what I’d be doing after taking voluntary severance from Rolls-Royce at the end of 2014, apart from looking forwards to a short break from work and then probably taking on short-term contracts. 

However, things changed quickly: an urgent request to project-manage a family member’s “grand design” house rebuild, was followed a couple of months later by a request from an ex-RR colleague to get an EU-funded, 10-party, £6M consortium project ready for launch (which subsequently turned into a further 3-year assignment to manage the project). 

This sudden upturn in workload led to my wife Sue also leaving the security of a permanent role and joining our business full time.
We got used to working together (!), with Sue picking up bookkeeping, project administration and  financial administration (for ourselves and clients) as well as generally running our business, whilst I concentrated on project management and delivery.

In 2020, our daughter joined us to gain some project management experience, staying with us until this year before taking on a role outside the business, having become a key player in our success and development.

Each time we came to the end of an assignment there was a recommendation from a client or stakeholder that led to another assignment. This has led us to providing project management services to several R&D and delivery projects, many of them being collaboration projects in the construction sector, with a total cumulative project value of over £55M. Through these assignments, we’ve worked with well over 50 clients, ranging from small family businesses to large multinationals.
Along the way we’ve had some fantastic experiences, as well as some challenging ones, whilst being directors of our own small business has in itself been a great learning experience.

Ten years on, we’re still going, and looking to grow. As well as enjoying the validation of recommendations, we’ve also ramped up our marketing and engagement to try to get us more “out there”.
